GB Railfreight identified concerns around the longevity and performance of existing scotch blocks under heavy operational use.

On inspection, significant wear and damage was evident, including:

• Splitting and crushing of block structure
   
• Handle and foam degradation
   
• Blocks becoming wedged under load
   
• Difficulty removing blocks safely 

Kildens worked on-site with GB Railfreight and industry partners to assess real-world usage and identify improvement opportunities.

Testing focused on:

• Understanding load impact on blocks
   
• Evaluating operational usage and placement
   
• Identifying failure points
   
• Trialling improved designs under live conditions

A series of controlled tests were carried out using modified scotch blocks fitted with a traction plate to improve adhesion.

Key findings included:

• Blocks held securely under load without movement
   
• No sliding observed during testing
   
• Traction plate performed consistently without damage
   
• Initial cracking identified led to design refinement
   

Following modification of the block profile, further testing showed:

• Elimination of splitting on the leading edge
   
• Maintained holding performance under load
   
• Improved durability

Kildens developed an enhanced scotch block design tailored to GB Railfreight’s operational requirements.

Key improvements included:

• Reprofiled block design to reduce stress points
   
• Removal of leading edge to eliminate splitting
   
• Integration of traction plate for improved adhesion
